The Translational Research Unit for Safety and Sustainability in Healthcare aims to reduce risks and never events to increase patient, staff, and organizational safety in surgery and other disciplines. In health-care innovation projects, we develop practical solutions and design health facilities to be safer and more sustainable. Expanding digital applications and competencies plays a central role. The focus also includes strengthening the health literacy of patients and the public.
As the first Medical University in Austria, a professorship for Patient Safety and Sustainability in Surgery was established in 2025. This professorship clearly and visibly reinforces the orientation of our research, teaching, and clinical collaboration and serves as an impulse for holistic safety cultures in health services. Our aim is to become the primary contact in the German-speaking world for implementation and sustainability research, thereby contributing to research, teaching, and treatment of this topic.
The Research Unit collaborates with the Medical Science City Graz (MSC Graz) network and the University Hospital of Graz, Department of Quality and Risk Management.
